Slave to Your Own Thoughts – Why We Need to Meditate

How much of your life has already passed you by – carried away by your own thoughts? It's one of the oldest questions in Buddhist practice, and for many, it sounds surprisingly familiar: Since time immemorial, we've been stuck in ideas and ingrained patterns that drive us on moment after moment, without us truly noticing.

"I often hear this teaching in Tibetan monasteries, and each time it strikes me anew. Because as soon as a thought arises, we follow it – and don't even realize how much of our life slips through our fingers in the process."

A lifetime fleeing from ourselves

As soon as a thought comes, we follow it. As soon as it fades, the next one appears – and we follow that one too. So one moment lines up after another, for an entire lifetime, without us ever pausing. When this life ends, we don't know for sure where we're going. What carries us on is our karma: the sum of all the thoughts, words, and deeds we have followed.

Why meditation is not a luxury That's why, in the Tibetan tradition, meditation is not considered a spiritual extra, but a necessity. It helps us not only to recognize the clear, awake state that we already carry within us, but to cultivate and deepen it again and again.

Longchenpa: Recognition is not enough

The great master Longchenpa once summed it up with a striking image: One may recognize their own true nature – but without constant practice, one is like a child left on a battlefield. It will inevitably be carried away.

A single moment of insight changes nothing. Only constant habituation turns fleeting recognition into a sustainable inner peace.
A small practice for everyday life Pause as soon as a thought carries you away. Observe, without immediately judging or acting. Return to your breath, to silence, to the present moment. Small anchors like an incense stick, a mala, or an incense burner can help you gently find your way back again and again.

At Himalaya Vibes, we encounter these small everyday anchors every day – as a scent, as prayer beads, as a ritual object. Here are a few companions for your own practice:
