Kunsang

"Rosewood is one of my favourite woods for malas. When I string the beads, I feel the fine grain with my fingers. No two beads are alike. This reminds me that everyone has their own path – and yet we all belong together."

Rosewood Mala – 108 Beads (⌀ 8 mm) – Hand-strung by Kunsang

This rosewood mala was hand-strung by Kunsang in our shop at Kramgasse 63 in Bern. Each of the 108 wooden beads was individually strung and carefully knotted, creating a mala that not only looks beautiful but also feels pleasant and balanced in the hand.

With its 8 mm beads and a weight of about 28 grams, this mala feels noticeable but light in the hand. The natural grain of the rosewood makes each individual bead a small unique piece. Gold-brown, honey-coloured and darker lines run across the wood, creating that lively structure that catches the eye at first glance. The simple finishing cord underlines the natural beauty of the wood and focuses on the essential.

Rosewood – A Wood with Character

Rosewood is one of the most precious woods in the world. For centuries, it has been used for high-quality musical instruments, carvings and spiritual objects. Its striking grain, which makes each bead unique, is particularly valued.

In many Buddhist traditions, wooden malas are deliberately chosen because they symbolise the connection to nature. Rosewood stands for grounding, stability and inner balance. The warm colours have a calming effect and remind us to return to our own centre again and again in everyday life.

Meaning of the 108 Beads

The number 108 has a deep symbolic meaning in Buddhism. It represents the 108 worldly attachments and habits that we can gradually let go of through mindfulness, meditation and compassion.

When reciting mantras or during a silent meditation, the hand moves bead by bead through the mala. Each round is an invitation to be fully present for a moment – without haste, without distraction, just with the breath and the present moment.

Handcrafted in Bern – Inspired by Tibet

Kunsang brings her Tibetan heritage and many years of experience into every mala. The stringing is not done casually. It is a calm, concentrated work that she has cultivated for many years. This creates a mala that is far more than a piece of jewellery – it becomes a personal companion for meditation, yoga or everyday life.

Many customers wear this mala not only for practising mantras, but also as a reminder to live more consciously and to repeatedly take time for peace and clarity.

Care & Application

  • Rosewood is a robust and durable wood that develops a beautiful natural patina over time.
  • An occasional wipe with a soft, dry cloth is usually sufficient.
  • In very dry air, a tiny drop of jojoba oil or natural wood oil can be used.
  • Direct and prolonged moisture should be avoided so that the wood remains beautiful for a long time.
  • Ideal for meditation, mantra recitation or as an everyday mala necklace.
  • The 8 mm beads are pleasantly grippy and are particularly suitable for people who like to feel a little more presence in their fingers during meditation.

The Bag – A Small Token of Appreciation

Each mala comes in a matching brocade bag. This way it stays protected and is already lovingly packaged – whether for yourself or as a gift for a special person.
