"Again and again, people come to my shop and say: I finally want to start meditating – but I don't know how. Then I put a Rudraksha mala in their hand and say: Start here. With this bead. With this breath."
Rudraksha Mala – 108 Beads made of Real Rudraksha Seeds
This mala consists of 108 real Rudraksha seeds, each 6 mm in diameter, with a total weight of around 17 grams. Rudraksha are the dried kernels of the fruits of the Elaeocarpus tree, which is native mainly to Nepal, India, and Tibet. Each seed bears natural grooves – the so-called mukhi or facets – which you can clearly see in the photos: this rough, lively surface is not a flaw but a sign of genuine nature.
On a mala of this size, the beads feel pleasant between the fingers – not too heavy, not too light. The red silk tassel at the end marks the guru bead, the starting point of each round.
Meaning & Tradition
In Tibet and throughout the Himalayan region, the mala is as much a part of daily life as morning prayer itself. 108 is a sacred number – it represents the 108 worldly desires in Buddhism, but also the completeness of the circle that always closes. With each bead, you speak a mantra, a wish, a breath. I often tell my customers: It's not about doing it perfectly. It's about starting.
Rudraksha have been considered particularly powerful meditation beads for centuries – they are said to calm the mind, strengthen concentration, and create a protective energy around the wearer. Whether you believe this or not: just touching the rough, warm surface has something deeply grounding.
Care & Application
- Rudraksha seeds like it dry – avoid moisture and soap, never immerse in water.
- Occasionally rub with a drop of coconut or sesame oil to prevent the wood from drying out and keep the surface beautiful.
- Store the mala in its brocade pouch when not in use – this protects it and preserves its energy.
- For meditation: hold the mala in your right hand, thumb and middle finger guide the beads – the index finger is traditionally left out.
The Pouch – a small gesture from us
Each mala is delivered in an elegant silk brocade pouch, which I personally select to match – sometimes in bright red with a gold pattern, sometimes in deep blue. This way, the mala is beautifully packaged right away, if it's meant to be a gift – or simply because beautiful things deserve a beautiful cover.
