Kunsang Choedon Stauffer – Himalaya Vibes Bern

Kunsang

"I designed this mala myself and strung it bead by bead. It's one of a kind. Once it's gone, it's gone – I won't make another exactly like it. That's important to me: every mala I make myself should be a genuine unique piece, not a mass-produced item."

Rudraksha Mala Unique Piece – 108 Beads (⌀ 11 mm), Hand-Strung by Kunsang

This mala is a unique piece – designed and hand-strung by Kunsang Choedon Stauffer, Himalaya Vibes Bern. It consists of 108 genuine Rudraksha seeds, each with a diameter of 11 mm, and a total weight of around 82 grams. With this size, it is the most prominent and heaviest mala in our entire range – each bead sits firmly and warmly in the hand, and the natural mukhi grooves are particularly impressive and tangible at this size.

What makes this mala even more special: It features two different counter beads made of yak bone – one plain with a metal ring, and one with hand-inlaid turquoise, coral, and metal. Both add a subtle splash of color to the warm orange-brown of the Rudraksha seeds. The vibrant golden-yellow silk tassel on the Guru bead completes the overall look – powerful, warm, distinctive.

Rudraksha of this size – what it means

Rudraksha seeds from the Elaeocarpus tree are available in various sizes – at 11 mm in diameter, these are among the largest used for a classic 108-bead mala. Each seed is a natural product: the shape, depth of the mukhi grooves, and color vary from bead to bead. This is particularly evident at this size – no two beads are identical. This makes this mala something living, which continues to evolve with every wear.

Meaning & Tradition

108 is a sacred number in Buddhism – it represents the 108 worldly desires that one releases through meditation and mantra chanting. A complete round means: you were fully present. Rudraksha have been considered particularly powerful meditation beads for centuries – their rough, organic surface grounds and connects. A large, heavy mala like this has something special: the weight in your hand reminds you that you are here – now, in this moment.

In Tibet, a mala is not a luxury item, but a silent companion in everyday life. I know this from my own family: the mala was always within reach, never far away.

Care & Application

  • Rudraksha seeds prefer dry conditions – avoid moisture and soap, never immerse in water.
  • Occasionally rub with a drop of coconut or sesame oil – this keeps the wood supple and develops a warmer, deeper hue over time.
  • Also keep the yak bone counter beads dry and do not allow them to come into contact with perfume or creams.
  • Store the mala in a brocade pouch when not in use – this protects it and preserves its energy.
  • For meditation: hold the mala in your right hand, guiding the beads with your thumb and middle finger – traditionally, the index finger is avoided.

The Pouch – a small token of appreciation

Every mala comes in a matching brocade pouch. This protects it and also ensures it's lovingly packaged – whether for yourself or as a gift for a special person.
