Kunsang Choedon Stauffer – Himalaya Vibes Bern

Kunsang

"This mala immediately catches the eye in the shop – that colour! When someone comes in and sees it, they almost always stop. In the Himalayas, turquoise is the colour of the sky and of protection. I always tell my customers: You don't just wear this mala – you wear it with feeling."

Turquoise Mala – 108 Howlite Beads (⌀ 8 mm)

This mala consists of 108 howlite beads in vibrant turquoise blue, each with a diameter of 8 mm and a total weight of approximately 70 grams. Howlite is a natural semi-precious stone with characteristic dark veining – in a close-up, these fine veins are clearly visible, making each bead a unique piece. The green silk thread, the guru bead, and the two small counter strings at the end harmoniously complete the overall picture – all in the same radiant turquoise colour.

Turquoise is considered one of the most significant stones in the Himalayan region – and this mala carries precisely that energy: expansive, clear, protective. At 70 grams, it rests comfortably in the hand, neither too heavy nor too light.

Howlite – what makes this stone special?

Howlite is a calcium-containing borosilicate mineral with a hardness of about 3.5 on the Mohs scale – softer than quartz, but perfectly suited for a mala as it is not exposed to strong mechanical stress. Its hallmark is the dark, spiderweb-like veins on a light background – a natural pattern that gives each stone its own unique design. In turquoise blue, howlite radiates a luminosity that consistently draws attention in the shop.

Meaning & Tradition

In Tibetan and Himalayan culture, turquoise has been the stone of trust, protection, and connection to the sky for centuries. Nomads wore it as a protective amulet on long journeys, and families exchanged it as a sign of solidarity. The colour itself – this bright blue-green – is reminiscent of the sky above the mountains and of water, which has a purifying and calming effect.

108 is a sacred number in Buddhism – it represents the 108 worldly desires that one releases through meditation and mantra recitation. With each bead, a breath, a mantra, a moment of reflection.

Care & Use

  • Howlite is sensitive to chemicals – avoid perfume, creams, and soap to preserve its surface.
  • After wearing, wipe with a soft, dry cloth – this maintains its shine.
  • Do not store in strong sunlight permanently, as intense UV radiation can affect the colour over time.
  • Keep the mala in a brocade pouch when not in use – this protects it and preserves its energy.
  • For meditation: hold the mala in your right hand, guiding the beads with your thumb and middle finger – traditionally, the index finger is not used.

The Pouch – a little gesture

Each mala comes in a matching brocade pouch. This protects it and also ensures it is lovingly packaged – whether for yourself or as a gift for a special person.
