Why 108 beads?
In Buddhism and Hinduism, 108 is a sacred number. With a mala you count mantras or breaths – one full round equals 108 repetitions. The large “guru bead” marks the beginning and the end.
How to use your mala
- Hold the mala in your right hand, draped over your middle or ring finger.
- Start at the bead right next to the guru bead.
- With each mantra or breath, pull one bead towards you with your thumb.
- When you reach the guru bead, don’t cross it – turn the mala around and go back the other way.
Care
Keep your mala dry and away from water and perfume. It’s best kept in a fabric pouch or on your altar.

Kunsang
"Wooden malas don't like being worn in water for too long or coming into contact with strong creams. It's best to simply keep them dry, and they will accompany you for many years."
Rosewood Mala Bracelet
In Tibet, we say: A mala is not just jewelry; it is a companion. This rosewood mala, with its warm, honey-colored beads and characteristic flowing grain, is reminiscent of the ancient wooden prayer beads from our homeland. Rosewood is often used for malas in the Tibetan tradition because it is considered grounding and calming. It is said to help collect restless thoughts and create a clear mind for meditation or mantra counting.
